PFV vs LOVB 🏐

PVF vs LOVB Volleyball League Wars:

The questions for the PVF and LOVB is whether one or both "can survive long-term even if they play different times of year or whether they will merge.”

The launch of PVF brought out a ton of excited fans, 11,624 to be exact. The fans packed the house at the CHI Health Center showing that there is an audience for professional volleyball. While it may look like PVF and LOVB will be competing with one another for viewers and audience, with how each league is structured differently there is a chance that they can both co-exist.

The PVF has a “more traditional structure” but with the LOVB, each of their teams are associated with a junior volleyball club which is where the pros can “train alongside club players and joining them in other activities”. With these two leagues being different in their own ways, this could help professional volleyball grow into a national phenomenon within the country.

PVF team owners are Bengals QB Joe Burrow, Magic Chair Dan DeVos, Olympic volleyball player Kerri Walsh Jennings, and artist Jason Derulo, while big-name investors in LOVB include Aces (F) Candace Parker, Celtics (F) Jayson Tatum, Suns (F) Kevin Durant, Billie Jean King, former U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn and entertainers Amy Schumer and Chelsea Handler (SportsBusinessJournal.com).

Pickleball x China → Olympic Dominance Loading…

The Dink Pickleball: PICKLEPOD PODCAST (full episode) spills the tea on China’s goals for Pickleball in the next few years…

Rumor has it China is building a pickleball army set on Olympic dominance. The new racquet sports craze has garnered attention and just like badminton and table tennis, they aim to dominate. Front Office Sports reports on what is developing in China.

China was a close second in medals in the 2024 Olympics in France. They were only behind the United States in total medals however, they tied with the United States with 40 gold medals.

With the emergence of pickleball, China wants to hit the ground running just in case there’s a chance pickleball has an Olympic future. With how dominant China has been in both badminton (20 of 39 gold medals) and table tennis (107 of 236 gold medals) they believe they would have a leg up over the competition.

This could become the boom of pickleball to where we can see a global outbreak of pickleballers around the world looking to become the next big thing in a growing sport.

Pushin’ “P” 🅿️: That’s Partnerships and PR from the past week highlighting the big brands showing love to emerging leagues and talent 🏓

How do athletes in niche sports make money?

We stumbled across this report from marketplace.org. As the world marvels at the extraordinary talents displayed during the Olympics, a pressing question emerges: How do athletes in niche sports sustain themselves financially? A recent investigation reveals the challenging economic landscape faced by competitors in artistic swimming, breaking, and table tennis.

While Olympic medalists receive cash prizes from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, these rewards are far from sufficient to support a full-time athletic career. Many athletes resort to creative solutions to make ends meet. Artistic swimmers, for instance, may find work in entertainment, appearing in movies or commercials. Breakers often teach at dance studios or perform in shows, while table tennis players might run camps or coach private lessons.

The rise of social media has opened new avenues for income, with some athletes leveraging platforms like TikTok and Instagram to build personal brands and attract sponsorships. However, balancing these side gigs with rigorous training schedules remains a constant challenge.

Despite the financial hurdles, there's growing optimism within these sports communities. Increased media attention and the inclusion of breaking in the Olympics have sparked new interest from sponsors and fans alike. As these niche sports gain popularity, athletes hope for more sustainable career paths in the future.

Quick Hits 🎯

  • Colleges are looking for athletes for niche sports which could give an edge to those applying for scholarships.

  • 5 new sports are now taking wagers: Reindeer Racing, Quidditch, Cow Chip Tossing, Jai Alai, and Mountain Unicycling.
